About this tool
Descriptive statistics summarise a set of numbers: where the centre is (mean, median, mode), how spread out the values are (range, variance, standard deviation), and the basics like count, sum, minimum and maximum.
This calculator reports both sample and population versions of variance and standard deviation, so you can pick the right one for your data. Paste your numbers in any common format and the results update instantly, all in your browser.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between sample and population statistics?
Sample variance and standard deviation divide by n − 1 (use this for a sample of a larger group); population versions divide by n (use this when you have the whole group).
What is the mode if nothing repeats?
If no value repeats, there is no mode. If several share the highest frequency, all of them are shown.
