Coefficient of Variation Calculator
Calculate the coefficient of variation of your data, for sample and population, with mean and std dev.
How to use it
- Paste your numbers Separated by commas or spaces.
- Read the CV As a percentage, for sample and population.
- Compare data sets A higher CV means more relative spread.

About this tool
Two data sets can have the same standard deviation yet very different meanings if their averages differ. The coefficient of variation fixes this by expressing spread relative to the mean, giving a unit-free percentage you can compare across scales.
This calculator reports both the sample and population versions, along with the mean and standard deviation behind them. It’s widely used in finance, science and quality control. Everything is computed in your browser.
Frequently asked questions
What is the coefficient of variation?
It's the standard deviation divided by the mean, shown as a percent. It measures spread relative to the average rather than in absolute units.
Why two versions?
The sample version divides by n − 1 and suits a sample drawn from a larger group; the population version divides by n and suits complete data.
