About this tool
Digital sizes are a common source of confusion because two prefix systems exist. The decimal SI prefixes (kB, MB, GB) are powers of 1,000, while the binary IEC prefixes (KiB, MiB, GiB) are powers of 1,024. This is why a “1 TB” drive shows up as about 931 GiB in your operating system.
This converter includes both systems side by side, plus bit-based units used for network speeds. It runs entirely in your browser.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a kilobyte and a kibibyte?
A kilobyte (kB) is 1,000 bytes (decimal). A kibibyte (KiB) is 1,024 bytes (binary). Operating systems often show binary sizes while drives are sold in decimal.
How many bits are in a byte?
Eight. Bandwidth is usually measured in bits per second, storage in bytes.
