About this tool
Leap years keep our calendar in step with the Earth’s orbit, but the rule has a twist for century years. This checker tells you instantly whether any year is a leap year and explains the result with the key details.
Along with the verdict you get the number of days in the year, the length of February, and the next few leap years coming up. The rule applied is the full Gregorian one — divisible by 4, except centuries unless divisible by 400 — and it all runs in your browser.
Frequently asked questions
What makes a year a leap year?
A year is a leap year if it's divisible by 4, except century years, which must also be divisible by 400. So 2000 was a leap year but 1900 wasn't.
Why do we have leap years?
They keep the calendar aligned with Earth's orbit, which takes about 365.24 days, by adding a 29th of February roughly every four years.
