Download Time Calculator
Estimate transfer time from a file size and connection speed, handling megabits and megabytes.
How to use it
- Enter the file size With its unit (MB, GB or TB).
- Enter your speed In Mbps, Gbps or MB/s.
- Read the time A clear estimate of the transfer time.

About this tool
Knowing how long a download will take helps you plan, but the maths trips people up because speeds and file sizes use different units. This calculator handles the megabit-versus-megabyte conversion for you and gives a clear time estimate.
Enter the file size and your connection speed in whichever units you have, and it returns the transfer time in a readable form. The note explains why an “8×” gap between Mbps and MB/s exists. Everything is computed in your browser.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the unit matter so much?
Connection speeds are usually quoted in megabits (Mbps), but file sizes in megabytes (MB). Since a byte is 8 bits, mixing them up makes the answer eight times wrong.
Will my download really take this long?
It's an ideal estimate. Real transfers are a little slower due to overhead, congestion and the server's own limits.
