About this tool

Knowing how long a download will take helps you plan, but the maths trips people up because speeds and file sizes use different units. This calculator handles the megabit-versus-megabyte conversion for you and gives a clear time estimate.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the unit matter so much?

Connection speeds are usually quoted in megabits (Mbps), but file sizes in megabytes (MB). Since a byte is 8 bits, mixing them up makes the answer eight times wrong.

Will my download really take this long?

It's an ideal estimate. Real transfers are a little slower due to overhead, congestion and the server's own limits.
