About this tool

A word counter gives you an instant, accurate picture of a piece of writing. It is handy when you have a length target to hit — an essay with a maximum word count, a meta description that must stay short, or a social post with a strict character limit.

Because everything runs in your browser, counting is immediate and completely private: your text is never sent to a server. That makes it safe to use for drafts, confidential notes or anything you would rather keep on your own device.

Alongside the word count you also get characters (with and without spaces), sentences, paragraphs and an estimated reading time, so you can shape your writing to fit the format you are working in.

Frequently asked questions

How is a word counted?

A word is any run of non-space characters, so "don't" and "well-being" each count as a single word.

How is reading time estimated?

We assume an average reading speed of about 200 words per minute, a common benchmark for adult silent reading.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. All counting happens locally in your browser, so your text never leaves your device.
